| Which Colour Cars are Safest? |
|
Cars that come in unpopular colours - such as white or beige - are much less likely to be involved in road crashes, a new study has found.
Black, now the second most popular colour among UK car buyers, was the least safe colour according to the research by Monash University's Accident Research Centre (MUARC) in Melbourne, Australia. Compared to white vehicles, black cars had a 12% higher crash risk, closely followed by grey cars with an 11% higher risk. Silver vehicles, the most popular among UK drivers, were next at 10%, then blue and red - both 7% higher risk than white. Other car colours such as cream, yellow and beige ranked closely to white, but no other colour could surpass it when it came to safety. The MUARC researchers examined road crash data from between 1987 and 2004 in Victoria and Western Australia that resulted in death or injury or a vehicle being towed away. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that last year 726,000 new cars were sold in silver, followed by black (522,000). Blue was in third place (521,000) followed by grey (309,000) and red (192,000). |
