The Cost of Driving

Whilst we complain about the spiralling cost of petrol or diesel, many drivers waste fuel every day as soon as they step into their vehicle.  Follow these few common sense tips and be happy in the knowledge that the taxman will be the only loser!

· Check your tyre pressures at least every two weeks. Under-inflated tyres can cost you at least 8% more on fuel and under or over inflated tyres adversely affect the handling of the vehicle, wear out much faster, and can get you points on your license. According to the RAC up to 90% of vehicles on the road have tyres with incorrect pressures!

· Smooth and consistent driving can reduce fuel consumption by more than 10 per cent, particularly in urban areas. Good timely gear changing can save a driver as much as 20%.

· Loaded vehicles and leaving a roof rack on a vehicle can add as much as 30% to the fuel bill. Unload the vehicle and remove a roof rack when not required.

· Close the sunroof and windows when travelling out of town to optimise the smooth flow of air over the vehicle and keep .

· Turn off the air conditioning and the heated rear window when they're not needed to save around 10% at the pumps.

· Avoid excessive idling of your engine - it is often more economical to switch it off when stationery.

· Drive at the recommended speed. Remember for every 5 miles per hour that you drive over 60mph can reduce your fuel economy by a staggering 10%.

· Fuel prices at the pumps may vary by significantly - so do your research, but please don’t drive miles just to save a few pence per litre!  When this happens the advertising people have won!

Happy driving..........
